The piece And Yet No Further, for five instruments, is inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; the title, in fact, is a literal quotation of a verse of the famous balcony scene.
I choose this passage of the tragedy because there the emotional tension of the two young lovers is more noticeable than ever.
The intensity of this part is given by the hard interior contrast of the two characters; in both, in fact, there is at the same time the fear of act, or rather, the anxiety to go against the will of the respective families, and, on the opposite side, the need to act, the desire to put an end at the grudge between the two dynasties and live following their feelings, with all the consequences that this decision could give rise to.
This internal conflict bring on a climax of tension, that I tried to adapt to music by means of, for example, particular harmonic fields, specific intervals, rhythmic subdivisions and so on, but also using reverberations and distortions of the sound as well as the usage of rests, that are transformed from simple breaths to essential part of the musical discourse.
